We are Red Rosa's
the cultural home of the left in Glasgow

A left-wing gathering place, a space for cultural, social, educational, and political events. It has been far too long since we've had such a space in Glasgow. A place to hire, a place to meet, a place to socialise and a place to organise.

PROJECT RENOVATION

This has been a project that required a lot of sweat, tenacity, funds and energy to bring it to fruition. The building we have occupied had been empty with no heating or caretaking for six years or more. This presented lots of challenges!  However we were up for the challenge..........It is however a work in progress.....

Beginning

Cold, damp, leaking roof, collapsed ceilings, interior walls crumbling, leaking pipes and so much more to contend with.

Middle

Leaky roof repaired, limestone repaired,  interior re-shaped, repaired walls, pipework, toilets refurbished, replacement flooring, outside walls painted and so much more fixed inside..

End

Thanks to the talent, skillset and craftsmanship of our Comrade, Abbas Ftouni, we have have a fabulous new space rising phoenix like from the ashes.......

OUR STORY.

The Calton has a rich working-class history, including the first recorded strike in Glasgow in 1787. This strike by Calton Weavers, led to six weavers being shot and killed by the Militia. If we don't protect and share our history, it will be lost to future generations. Then and now the working-class needs a space to promote that history. We hope that Red Rosa's can be that space.

It has been far too long since we’ve had an open space for socialists and the broader Left to meet in this city. A place to hire, a place to meet, a place to socialise and a place to organise.

A few of us have got together to renovate and restore a place in the iconic Barras. We hope this can be a left-wing gathering place, a space for cultural, social, educational, community and political events. The space is not affiliated to any organisation.

We hope that it will be a useful hub for the Left, and more importantly contribute towards the building of a United Working Class. We have a field of dreams for this space but it is very much a case of ‘try it and see’ – the space will only evolve and become meaningful if it is supported and used.

The past we inherit, the future we build!
